Birdland (arr. Paris Rutherford) - The Manhattan Transfer (Choral, SSA)
Einfach
Composed by Josef Zawinul for the trend-setting jazz group Weather Report, “Birdland” became a landmark in vocal jazz when lyric’d by Jon Hendricks and recorded by the Manhattan Transfer. This arrangement is an adaptation of the Manhattan Transfer version. Three soloists are involved. Improvised responses beginning with bar 71 can be sung and/or spoken by one or all three of the soloists simultaneously. If by more than one, they should sing/speak to each other and not to the audience at that point. One of the soloists should improvise at bar 147. Music from the original is included for the first few bars – then the soloist should sing what comes to mind. Important: this arrangement can conclude one of two ways, both equally effective. • The section at bar 147 can repeat several times, and a stage fade (sound and lights) can take place to end the tune. If using this method for ending, the singers should move their mics away from their mouths (very slowly and on cue) to help achieve the sound fade. • Or, the section at bar 147 can repeat as written with the tall chord (second ending) serving to close the performance. Have fun with this one – it is a landmark. Paris Rutherford
