“Shiny Stockings” is a wonderful and engaging song composed by Frank Foster for the Count Basie band. That in itself suggests the swing style most appropriate for this tune and this arrangement – 4/4 Swing Style.
Lyrics by Ella Fitzgerald add extra audience appeal, and fit the tune marvelously!
Style: in the 4/4 swing style, most of the vocal figures should be very slightly behind the accompaniment. Not so much later that the effect feels like dragging, though. Listen to Basie then the vocal recording to hear how this comes about successfully.
“Shiny Stockings” lyrics sound and feel the best when they are sung much the same as when we speak to people close-at-hand. That is, with what seems like a small smile. This type of vocal enunciation matches the audience-pleasing effect of using our hands to tell some of our own story as we sing. This is important for the Vocal Jazz Ensemble!
The improvised solo (m. 46 onward) can be sung with the transcribed solo, a totally individual solo (male or female), or even with a wind instrument. There is also a Piano solo on the demonstration recording.
Enjoy “Shiny Stocking” – it was very exciting while being arranged at this end!
