This jazz classic, composed by Duke Ellington, Irving Mills and Juan Tizol, provides an exciting and energetic closer to a set, or even a full show. It’s a “barn burner” and will be fun and rewarding for your group to sing, and leave your audiences wanting more! “Caravan” opens the gate for multiple solos, both vocal and instrumental. Solos begin at measure 66. Improvised solos can be either 16 bars or the full 32 bars. If 32 bars, use the choir backgrounds for second 16; if only 16 bars (more soloists), you can choose to avoid the vocal backgrounds. Last soloist should be the keyboard, which has fills leading up to the return of vocals in “Circle Singing” style. Beginning at measure 116 is a 16-bar section beginning with 12 bars written in the style of Bobby McFerrin’s “Circle Singing,” then moving directly into the 4-bar “Caravan” signature. The D.S. al Coda completes the arrangement. When your group first encounters measure 116, it might be helpful to sing along with the demo track before moving into piano-supported a cappella. Note: If the singers become comfortable and secure with this section, the pianist can remain silent till beat three, measure 127 –– director’s decision. (If keyboard becomes silent at measure 116 one of the singers can play eighth-note shaker rhythms till the piano returns at measure 127.) I hope you and your group enjoy your ride on this “Caravan!” Paris Rutherford
